A Boys’ Bathroom, All Grown Up: A Before & After Transformation
There’s something especially fun about designing a kid’s space that doesn’t feel like a kid’s space. For this boys’ bathroom renovation, our goal was to create something fresh and playful enough for right now, while still feeling elevated and timeless enough to grow with him for years to come.
And this one was a complete transformation.
A bathroom designed to grow with him!
Soft blue tile, light oak, polished nickel, and a playful terrazzo floor came together to completely transform this once-dated boys’ bathroom into a space that feels fresh, timeless, and full of personality.
The Before: Ready for a Fresh Start
The original bathroom had great potential, but it was definitely ready for an update. White tile covered the walls, the plain white vanity blended into the space, and the finishes felt dated and lacked personality.
Rather than simply updating a few finishes, we saw an opportunity to completely rethink the look and feel of the bathroom. We wanted to brighten it, warm it up and give it a personality of its own, all without making the design feel overly themed or juvenile.
Our Vision: Light, Fresh & Timeless
We built the entire design around a soft palette of light blue, warm beige, light oak and crisp whites.
The blue brings in just enough color to make the bathroom feel fun and youthful, while the beige and natural oak add warmth and keep the space from feeling too cool. We finished everything with polished nickel hardware and plumbing fixtures, which added that classic, slightly traditional detail we were looking for.
The result feels appropriate for a young boy now, but nothing about the bathroom will feel too young as he gets older. That balance was incredibly important to us.
The Detail That Tied It All Together
One of our favorite elements is the soft blue tile.
Instead of using it in just one area, we carried the same tile from the backsplash behind the vanity over to the front of the bathtub. It was a small design decision that made a huge impact.
Using the tile in both locations creates continuity throughout the bathroom while turning the tub into a statement of its own. It also gave us an opportunity to introduce color in a way that feels intentional rather than overwhelming.
Inside the shower, we kept things lighter with white tile, allowing that beautiful blue detail to stand out even more.
The Perfect Vanity for the Space
Rather than going the custom route, we sourced the vanity from Four Hands, and it ended up being the perfect fit for both the space and our client’s aesthetic.
The light oak finish brought in the warmth and natural texture the bathroom needed, while the clean, furniture-inspired design made the room feel more elevated. It’s a great reminder that not every piece needs to be custom to feel intentional, sometimes it’s about finding the right piece that checks every box.
Paired with the marble-look countertop, polished nickel faucet and soft blue backsplash, the vanity became one of the defining elements of the finished bathroom.
We carried that same warmth into the floating wood shelves near the shower, creating another subtle connection across the room.
A Little Terrazzo Moment
To ground the softer blue and warm wood tones, we chose a beautiful light grey terrazzo for the flooring. The subtle variation and flecks throughout the terrazzo add just the right amount of texture and visual interest without competing with the other finishes.
It also brought another playful element into the bathroom while still feeling sophisticated and timeless. Against the light oak vanity and blue tile, the terrazzo helps tie the entire palette together and gives the room that layered, collected feeling we love.
What Does a Bathroom Renovation Like This Cost?
We know everyone wants to know the numbers! While every renovation is different, we wanted to give you a realistic idea of what a transformation like this can look like financially.
For a small full bathroom like this one, materials and furnishings can typically fall in the $10,000–$15,000 range, with design fees around $2,500–$4,000+, depending on the selections and scope of the project.
For this particular bathroom, our client invested just under $15,000 in materials, furnishings and design fees combined. She chose to work with her own contractor, so labor and installation costs were separate from that investment.
When professional labor is factored in, we recommend planning for an overall investment of approximately $25,000–$40,000+ for a full bathroom renovation of this size and level of finish.
A smaller bathroom may have less square footage, but there are still a lot of moving pieces! Thoughtful selections and knowing where to invest can make all the difference in creating a space that feels elevated, functional and built to last.
The Before & After
Looking back at where this bathroom started makes the finished space that much more satisfying.
What was once a dated, mostly white bathroom is now bright, warm, polished and full of character. The footprint may be familiar, but the experience of the room feels completely different.
It’s playful without being childish. Classic without feeling boring. And most importantly, it’s a bathroom that can evolve right alongside him.
