Why Choosing the Right Color Changes Everything
Paint is one of the most transformative tools in design, yet it’s often one of the most underestimated.
Many people think selecting paint is simply about choosing a color they like. In reality, paint has the power to completely change how a space feels, how materials read, and how architecture is experienced.
A color can make a room feel warm and inviting or cold and disconnected. It can enhance natural light or work against it. That’s why we believe paint selection is never just about choosing a beautiful color—it’s about understanding the space as a whole.
Paint Should Support the Story of the Home
When we begin selecting paint, we rarely start by asking, “What color do you want?”
Instead, we ask deeper questions.
How should the home feel?
What mood are we trying to create?
How does light move through the space?
What materials surround the walls?
Paint does not exist in isolation. It interacts with flooring, cabinetry, stone, tile, millwork, hardware, and lighting.
This is why a paint color that looks beautiful in one home can feel completely different in another.
Start With Feeling, Not the Paint Deck
One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing paint too quickly.
We prefer to start with emotion.
Should the space feel:
Light and airy
Warm and grounded
Rich and moody
Soft and organic
Once we understand the feeling we want to create, selecting the right color becomes much more intentional.
Why Undertones Matter
Undertones are often what make paint selection tricky.
Two beige colors may look nearly identical on a swatch, but once on the wall, one may read pink while another reads green, yellow, or gray.
Lighting plays a huge role here too. Natural light, exposure, and even your light bulbs can completely shift how a color reads throughout the day.
That’s why we always recommend viewing paint in the actual space before making a final decision.
Not sure what beige you want to pick? These two are staple colors you can’t go wrong with.
Sometimes It’s About Adjusting the Formula
One detail we pay close attention to, and something many people don’t realize is possible, is adjusting the percentage of a paint formula.
Sometimes a color is almost perfect, but at full strength it feels slightly too saturated or heavy.
Instead of choosing a completely different color, we can reduce the intensity while keeping the undertones intact.
This can be a game changer.
In our Casa Del Vento project, we used Natural Tan at 75% for the baseboards and trim rather than 100%.
That subtle shift made all the difference.
By softening the intensity, we created a more seamless transition between the walls, trim, and architectural details. It added depth and dimension without harsh contrast.
Sometimes the smallest adjustments create the biggest impact.
Colors We’re Currently Loving
Lately, we’ve been drawn to warm, earthy neutrals with depth—colors that feel timeless, layered, and elevated.
Accessible Beige
Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige is one of our favorite warm neutrals. It feels balanced and versatile without leaning too yellow or too gray.
Whispering Woods
Benjamin Moore Whispering Woods feels soft, earthy, and grounding. It adds warmth while still reading refined and timeless.
Cola
Farrow & Ball Cola is rich, moody, and dramatic
perfect for spaces where we want more intimacy and character.
Natural Linen
Sherwin-Williams Natural Linen is another timeless neutral tone that gives off
a warm and cozy vibe.
Our Love for Limewash
We’ve also been gravitating toward more textured wall finishes, especially limewash.
We’ve been loving JH Wall Paint color 500 and 104.
Limewash offers something traditional paint cannot: movement.
Its natural tonal variation creates softness, depth, and a beautifully organic finish. As light changes throughout the day, the walls shift with it, bringing the space to life.
It’s one of our favorite ways to add quiet luxury and texture.
The Ceiling: The Fifth Wall
Ceilings are one of the most overlooked opportunities in design.
We often refer to them as the fifth wall, because they deserve just as much attention as every vertical surface.
Whether we paint the ceiling the same color as the walls for a cozy effect or use it as an accent, this small design move can completely transform a room.
Our Philosophy on Paint
The best paint colors aren’t always the trendiest, they’re the ones that make a home feel right.
For us, paint is about more than color.
It’s about atmosphere.
It’s about emotion.
It’s about creating spaces that feel layered, intentional, and timeless.
Whether through soft neutrals, moody tones, limewash, color drenching, or custom formula adjustments, every paint decision should support the story of the home.
