Let's Talk Balance: Choosing a Palette for a Pattern-Infused Space

Interior design is an art form where balance plays a crucial role, especially when it comes to creating spaces infused with multiple design patterns. The challenge here isn’t just selecting colors that you like but creating a cohesive and harmonious environment. Let’s get into it!

Balancing Act: Achieving Visual Harmony

To achieve visually aesthetic harmony in a pattern-infused space, you first need to understand the principles of design balance. These involve the mixing of scales, colors, and textures. Patterns, when well coordinated, can bring a sense of movement or depth to a room. It’s about finding the right mix - large patterns paired with smaller ones, and a balancing act between colors that complement each other without overwhelming the space. Textures can also add another layer of interest and help you to soften or enhance your space.

Personalized Palette: Reflecting Individual Style

While design principles are important, you should never let go of your personal style preferences. Your space should reflect who you are. When selecting a color palette, think about what colors reflect your personality. Your space should scream “YOU” at every glance. Are you drawn to bold, vibrant colors like bright green and yellow, or are you drawn to subdued, earthy tones like muted browns and neutrals? This is a great starting point. Incorporate personal touches to make the space your own whether that's through your favorite pattern, artwork, or a funky color scheme. This adds a layer of individuality to the room and gives meaning to your designs.

Real-life Inspiration

Project 31, a complete build out of a Parisian-style bedroom, has been one of my favorite projects to date. This client opted for a muted pink color scheme that was so fun to design. I paired a pink wall paper, with brass and gold accents,  neutral toned curtains, pink embroidered sheets, different colored picture frames, and finished with a fun circular patterned rug. If you were to look at all of the elements separately, it might be hard to imagine how they could become one. It’s important to remember that your pieces need to play off of each other, and compliment each other rather than draw too much attention. I was able to achieve this fun look by using different shades of light pink, and highlighting the room with gold accents. The wallpaper really pulls the room together, and the completely different pattern of the rug gives it that individuality.

Achieving balance in a pattern-infused space is both an art and a science. It requires a thoughtful approach to color and pattern selection. It’s important to always keep the overall harmony of your space in mind. The goal is to create an environment that feels both aesthetically pleasing and uniquely yours. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your designs! With the right approach, you can create a beautiful, pattern-infused space.
